J's book review: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief  is about a young boy named Percy Jackson. Percy was having lots of trouble in school due to the fact that he had a learning disability called dyslexia. As the story progressed he learned that his dyslexia and all his frustrations were caused by the fact that he was actually a demigod... the son of a greek god and a mortal mother. When he was 12 years old circumstances caused him to have to leave home and go to a summer camp for people just like him. The story is aimed at pre-adolescent and adolescent children, ages 10 to around 13.

The other main characters in the story are Grover, Percy’s best friend at school who turned out to be a “Satyre” (half boy and half goat) his history teacher, Chiron, who turned out to be a Centaur, Annabeth, Percy’s mother, Sally, and his very stinky and mean step father.

My favorite part of the story is when Percy arrives at camp and learns that he’s not the only boy in the world with his peculiar problem. From camp he goes on an adventure fraught with dangers and which carries him from Long Island on the east coast of the United States, all the way to California.

I enjoyed the book for what it was... a book aimed at younger children. it’s not really a funny story and i felt as though i was looking at it through the eyes of the author/narrator, rather than the main character’s eyes. In my opinion, the story could have been presented better, as it seemed a bit ‘disjointed’ at times and didn't seem to flow well.

All in all, however, i believe that young readers will enjoy the story.
